Terengganu’s public holidays are mostly the same as other states. However, it does celebrate two unique holidays: the Anniversary of the Installation of the Sultan of Terengganu and the Sultan of Terengganu’s Birthday.

Beginning in March 1999, the fourth of the month became a public holiday in Terengganu in order to celebrate the installation of Sultan Zainal Abidin’s ascension to the throne one year earlier, on March 4, 1998. He ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Mahmud al-Muktafi Billah Shah.

April 26 is a public holiday in honour of the Sultan of Terengganu’s birthday. Awards and recognition are often bestowed on citizens who have provided outstanding service to the country. In addition, special sermons and prayers are held throughout the country in order to honour the state’s ruler.
