Visitors to Terengganu say that it is as if time stood still. While other states in the country are more modern and are developing rapidly, Terengganu still retains the rustic charm of the past.
It is home to a diverse and close-knit society where charm and friendliness are the norm. It has the longest coastline in Malaysia, lush tropical rainforests and tranquil emerald waters. It is a hidden paradise that is almost unmoved by time.
State-specific public holidays
Terengganu ’s public holidays are mostly the same as other states. However, it does celebrate two unique holidays: the Anniversary of the Installation of the Sultan of Terengganu and the Sultan of Terengganu’s Birthday.
Beginning in March 1999, the fourth of the month became a public holiday in Terengganu in order to celebrate the installation of Sultan Zainal Abidin’s ascension to the throne one year earlier, on March 4, 1998. He ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Mahmud al-Muktafi Billah Shah.
April 26 is a public holiday in honour of the Sultan of Terengganu’s birthday. Awards and recognition are often bestowed on citizens who have provided outstanding service to the country. In addition, special sermons and prayers are held throughout the country in order to honor the state’s ruler.
Things to see and do in Terengganu
One of the main attractions in Terengganu is the long stretch of beach, spanning 244 kilometres. Some of the beaches in Terengganu overlook South China while all have white, powdery beaches and crystal clear water.
Just 50 kilometres off the coast, Redang Island is the most developed in Terengganu. It is a popular diving location as there are several shipwrecks off the coast. There are many waterfalls in Terengganu as well, but one recently discovered beauty is the highest in Malaysia. Chemerong Waterfall, located near Dungun, is untouched, providing a rich, natural experience.
