Mizan Zainal Abidin, the sitting Sultan of Terengganu, was born on 22 January 1962. He became the seventeenth sultan of his state in 1998 but was not officially coronated until early in 1999.
Terengganu’s sultan is both head of state and head of the Islamic religion within the state, both of which positions are constitutionally defined and protected.
Sultan Mizan resides at the royal palace located in Terengganu’s capital and largest city of Kuala Terengganu. He received an advanced education overseas in Australia and in London, which includes intensive military training.
Sultan Mizan was head over the Council for Islam and Malay Culture in his home state for four years, and when he was appointed sultan in 1998, he was the youngest head over any Malaysian state.
The birthday of Sultan Mizan is marked by a royal birthday party and is a very ornate, ceremonious event.
