Johor is the southernmost state in Malaysia and the fifth largest in size. The state is connected by two bridges to Singapore and over 300,000 of the citizens of Johor are employed in Singapore. However, many residents of Singapore visit Malaysia in order to shop in the affordable shopping malls. The capital city, Johor Bahru, is an important industrial and commercial hub with a strong tourist trade.
State-specific Public Holidays
Johor’s public holidays are mostly the same as other states in Malaysia. However it does celebrate a special holiday each year for the Sultan of Johor’s Birthday. In 2015, The state government announced that March 23 would be a public holiday, replacing November 22 which had historically been celebrated as the Sultan of Johor’s birthday.
The change was made in honour of the coronation of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskander who is the fifth Sultan in modern Johor history. Initially, the government planned to add a holiday for the coronation, but instead chose to replace celebration of the Sultan’s birthday with a celebration of his coronation.
