Unlike other Malaysian states that have a hereditary monarch called a “sultan”, Negeri Sembilan has a “Yang Di-Pertuan Besar” instead. The office doesn’t really differ in powers, but it does differ in how the ruler is chosen.
A council of undangs elects the new YDPB upon the death of the former one. They have guidelines they are supposed to follow in making the selection, but sometimes, they may deviate from them. For example, the current YDPB was originally bypassed for the position in 1967. He was the son of the former YDPB, but probably due his youth (only 19 at the time) his uncle was chosen instead.
But Tuanku Muhriz was finally elected as YDPB after his uncle died in 2008. Muhriz is the eleventh YDPB since the position was created in 1773. He resides at the royal city of Seri Menanti, which differs from the state capital city of Seremban.
