Currently, Perak’s sultan is Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who has reigned since ascending his throne in 2014. His royal residence is in Kuala Kangsar, even though the administrative capital of Perak is in Ipoh.
Sultan Nazrin Shah is the eldest son of the previous Sultan of Perak, Azlan Shah. He is well educated, having studied in both Kuala Lumpur, London, and at Harvard in the U.S. He holds multiple college degrees. He is also an accomplished author and speaker and is considered one of the main leaders of Islam within the state of Perak.
Nazrin Shah became crown prince in 1984 and sultan on 29 May, 2014, making him the thirty-fifth sultan to ever reign over the state. He is held in great honour at special ceremonies and events that take place on his official birthday celebration on the first Friday of November.
