Sarawak is one of only a handful of states in Malaysia not headed by royalty. Instead these states have a governor appointed by the monarch of Malaysia. The governor’s title in Malay is “Yang di-Pertua Negeri”.
Since 2014, the governor of Sarawak has been Abdul Taib Mahmud. Abdul Taib was in his late seventies when appointed governor. He was previously Sarawak’s Chief Minister for more than three decades.
