The tradition of celebrating “Hari Hol” began back in 1896, with the death of Sultan Abu Bakar, and has continued now for more than a century. It is a day of prayer for Muslims, who ask for Allah to forgive the sins of the previous sultan and to bless the state of Johor. Muslims also remember the late sultan’s good deeds on this day.
A special ceremony is held on Hari Hol at the Royal Mausoleum, where over 40 deceased members of the Johor royal house are buried. The sitting sultan will lay flowers at the mausoleum and sprinkle perfumed water over the graves. Prayers will be recited by high-level religious leaders of Johor. Most government officials of high rank must attend the ceremony.
