Sabah celebrates the Sabah Governor’s Birthday with a public holiday on the first Saturday of every October. The governor is called the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah in Malay, and he is appointed to that position by the king of Malaysia.

The current governor of Sabah is Juhar Mahiruddin, who was appointed to his first term in 2011 and to his second term in 2015. Governors get four-year terms, but there are no term limits. Many powers of appointment and the power to approve or disapprove bills passed by the Sabah parliament are invested in the governor of Sabah.
Juhar Mahiruddin was formerly the Speaker of the Sabah state parliament, between 2002 and 2010, before he rose to the office of governor.
